restoration and building history survey
2024
Client: Senate Properties
The pilot cabin, built next to the lighthouse on the island of Rönnskär in 1919, is one of the first public buildings after Finland´s independency in 1917. It served as a workplace and residence for the pilots of Porkkala until 1978, after which it was used sporadically and eventually left vacant.
The restoration took place during the summers of 2023 and 2024. The log frame was repaired, the façades were restored to their original appearance, the roof and chimney were renewed, and the windows were refurbished and newly made according to the old design. Additionally, an entrance porch was rebuilt on the northern side of the cabin. The contractor for the project was Perinnerakentaja Leo Lönnroth Oy.
After the renovation, the pilot cabin was equipped with solutions to improve air circulation and monitoring devices for indoor conditions. The collected data is used in a research project by the Senate Properties on the conservation of cold buildings.
